Wilfredo Medina-Perez, Methamphetamine and Fentanyl Distribution, California 2021

Wilfredo Medina-Perez, a 34-year-old native and citizen of Sinaloa, Mexico, residing in Bakersfield, California, has been sentenced to 10 years and five months in prison for distributing methamphetamine and fentanyl. This verdict was handed down today, wrapping up a case that began in 2018.

Between December 2018 and November 2019, Medina-Perez allegedly distributed approximately one pound of 100% pure methamphetamine and 8,078 counterfeit oxycodone pills containing fentanyl to an undercover agent. This brazen act earned him a spot behind bars.

Medina-Perez was arrested on a federal criminal complaint on November 22, 2019, and has remained in custody as a flight risk and danger to the community. The defendant pleaded guilty to the charges in December 2021, paving the way for his sentencing.

Last week, one of Medina-Perez’s runners, Uriel Ivan Portillo, 35, also a native and citizen of Mexico, was sentenced to three years and four months in prison for distributing fentanyl. Another associate, Rojelio Garcia, 49, was sentenced to time served for possessing fentanyl with the intent to distribute and placed on supervised release for three years.

This case was the result of a thorough investigation by the Drug Enforcement Administration, the Southern Tri-County High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area Task Force, the Kern County Sheriff’s Department, and the Bakersfield Police Department. Assistant United States Attorneys Karen Escobar and Angela Scott prosecuted the case.

The case is part of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) operation, which aims to disrupt and dismantle high-level criminal organizations that pose a threat to the United States. Additional information about the OCDETF Program can be found at www.justice.gov/OCDETF.

Medina-Perez’s crimes have had far-reaching consequences, and it’s clear that his actions put innocent lives at risk. His sentence serves as a reminder that those who engage in such activities will face severe penalties.
