Jesse Carey, Cocaine Possession with Intent to Distribute, PA 2018

Wilkes-Barre resident Jesse Carey, 30, is staring down federal time after being indicted on charges of possession with intent to distribute cocaine. The indictment, handed down February 6, 2018, by a federal grand jury in Scranton, marks the latest strike in a broader crackdown on drug activity in Northeast Pennsylvania.

The trouble began in August 2017 when casino security at Mount Airy Lodge flagged Carey for using fake identification at the entrance. Instead of complying, Carey attempted to flee. That move didn’t fly—security tackled him before he could vanish into the crowd, finding cocaine on his person during the takedown.

What started as a routine ID check spiraled into a federal case fast. The FBI and Pennsylvania State Police took over the investigation, building a case that landed Carey in the crosshairs of the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Middle District of Pennsylvania. Assistant U.S. Attorney Evan Gotlob is now leading the prosecution.

This case is being prosecuted under Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), the Justice Department’s high-pressure initiative aimed at slashing violent crime. Attorney General Jeff Sessions reinvigorated the program in October 2017, demanding U.S. Attorney offices nationwide craft aggressive strategies to choke off drug and street crime at the source.

If convicted, Carey faces up to 20 years in federal prison, a term of supervised release, and steep fines. But the real sentence won’t hinge on the maximum alone. Under Federal Sentencing Guidelines, judges weigh the crime’s severity, the defendant’s background, and public safety before ruling. The courtroom calculus is brutal—and unpredictable.

As always, the indictment is not a conviction. Jesse Carey is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. For now, the case sits on the federal docket, another name in the grinding machine of America’s war on drugs.
