CHAUNCEY WILLIAMS, 25, of Lakewood, Washington, received a ten-year sentence for his role in the armed robbery of the Oakbrook Contract Postal Unit. U.S. Attorney Jenny A. Durkan announced the sentencing, emphasizing the Department of Justice’s (DOJ) focus on illegal weapons possession in the Western District of Washington.
WILLIAMS, one of three robbers who held a gun to a clerk and demanded money from the till, was convicted by a jury on January 24, 2013. Judge Benjamin H. Settle cited the trauma caused by the armed robbery during sentencing on February 10, 2014.
WILLIAMS was identified after cashing a money order obtained in the robbery while on a trip to Hawaii. The case was investigated by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service (USPIS) and the Lakewood Police Department, with prosecution handled by Assistant United States Attorneys Gregory A. Gruber and David Reese Jennings.
In another significant firearms enforcement case, CARLOS CARMONA-GONZALEZ, 23, of Vancouver, Washington, was convicted of being a felon in possession of a firearm. The trial revealed that CARMONA-GONZALEZ, a member of the Surenos gang, placed a rifle in his friend’s car. He faces up to ten years in prison.
CARMONA-GONZALEZ has four previous felony convictions, including possession of MDMA and attempted assault. The case was investigated by the Longview Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms & Explosives (ATF), with assistance from the Vancouver Police Department. Assistant United States Attorneys Roscoe Jones and Jill Otake prosecuted the case.
These cases underscore the DOJ’s commitment to combating illegal firearms possession in Washington state.
