William Dale Newhoff, Jr., Firearms Violation, Montana 2018

A high-speed chase ended with the arrest of 36-year-old William Dale Newhoff, Jr. in East Missoula, Montana.

On January 30, 2018, Newhoff was a federal fugitive when the Missoula County Sheriff’s Office located him in East Missoula and notified the U.S. Marshal’s Service. A high-speed chase and extensive search ensued, culminating in Newhoff’s arrest in a trailer house in Missoula County.

When law enforcement officers found Newhoff standing behind a door, he was holding a 9mm pistol and had ammunition in his jacket pocket. He was arrested without incident.

Newhoff was later sentenced to 69 months in prison for probation and firearms violations. Chief U.S. District Judge Dana L. Christensen sentenced Newhoff to 51 months for being a prohibited person in possession of a firearm, to be served consecutive to an 18-month prison sentence imposed earlier by U.S. District Judge Donald W. Molloy.

The 18-month sentence was for the revocation of Newhoff’s supervised release in two earlier cases, one of which involved two firearms violations and the other, an escape charge.

Newhoff’s case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer. The PSN program brings together federal, state, local, and tribal law enforcement agencies and the communities they serve.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Cyndee L. Peterson prosecuted the firearms case, which was investigated by the U.S. Marshal’s Service, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, and the Missoula County Sheriff’s Office.
