William Joseph Timothy, Stealing Cash, Florida 2023

Federal prosecutors are closing in on a Naples Airport customs officer who allegedly stole thousands of dollars in cash from unsuspecting airline passengers.

William Joseph Timothy, a 43-year-old resident of Ave Maria, pleaded guilty in federal court to stealing approximately $18,700 in cash from 17 different incidents of theft uncovered by investigators from the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Office of Professional Responsibility.

The shocking scheme unfolded between mid-2023 and early 2024, with Timothy, who was assigned to the Naples Airport, using his official duties to surreptitiously steal cash from international passengers during border enforcement examinations and currency verifications.

According to the plea agreement, Timothy faces a maximum penalty of 10 years in federal prison, but a sentencing date has not yet been set. As part of his plea agreement, Timothy has agreed to pay full restitution to the victims of his thefts and to immediately resign from his employment with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Assistant United States Attorney Simon R. Eth is prosecuting the case, which was investigated by the U.S. Customs and Border Protection’s Office of Professional Responsibility.

The brazen thefts are a stark reminder of the importance of transparency and accountability in positions of public trust.

As the investigation unfolds, the public will be kept informed of any further developments in this case.
