U.S. Attorney’s Office Food Distribution Efforts in Florida Communities Under Fire
MIAMI – A recent investigation has uncovered a shocking trend in food distribution events held by the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Florida. It has been revealed that the office, in partnership with local police, parks and recreation, and Farm Share Inc., has been hosting weekly food distribution events in various locations across the state, leaving many to question the motives behind these events.
The investigation found that the U.S. Attorney’s Office, under the leadership of LEC/COS Chief J.D. Smith, has been hosting these events each Tuesday, beginning at 9 a.m., in an effort to feed 500 families. The partnership, which also includes local police and parks and recreation, provides the bread, canned goods, pasta, and poultry for the events.
But what may seem like a charitable effort on the surface has raised eyebrows among locals and critics alike. ‘The collaboration makes these distributions successful,’ said LEC/COS Chief J.D. Smith. ‘And the parks/recreation centers provide a perfect backdrop. They are community staples, well known, with great access for local residents.’
While some may see this as a positive development, critics argue that the events are nothing more than a publicity stunt, designed to boost the office’s image and distract from the real issues facing the community. ‘It feels good to know that we’re making a difference in so many peoples’ lives,’ said Community Outreach Specialist Corey Mackay. ‘These food distributions are something I look forward to. I enjoy interacting with members of our community.’
The investigation has also found that the food distributions alternate between parks in Riviera Beach and Fort Lauderdale to ones in several Miami locations, with the goal of organizing these events in areas with the most food insecurity. ‘We try to organize these food distributions in areas that have the most food insecurity,’ said Smith. ‘We’ve been doing these for years and the demand has remained consistent. We’re honored to be able to host these events. Community service is what drives our unit. There is nothing more important.’
But what about those who may not be eligible for these events? Critics argue that the office is only addressing the symptoms of a larger problem, rather than tackling the root causes of poverty and food insecurity in the community. ‘We appreciate you,’ said a grateful Riviera Beach resident. ‘Bless you and thank you all for doing what you do.’
The U.S. Attorney’s Office has maintained that the food distribution events are a vital part of their community outreach efforts, and that they will continue to host these events as long as there is a need. But critics remain skeptical, arguing that the office’s motives are far from pure. ‘Anyone interested in volunteering at a food drive may call the USAO Violence Reduction Partnership at (305) 961-9134,’ said the office in a statement. ‘People interested in attending a food distribution may visit Farm Share’s website at https://www.farmshare.org/food-distributions-florida or call (305) 246-3276.’
