William Morgan Jr., 34, of Boones Mills, Virginia, is headed to federal prison for five years after admitting his role in a cross-state methamphetamine distribution ring. Morgan was sentenced today in U.S. District Court in Roanoke to 60 months behind bars, closing another chapter in a drug network that stretched from California to the heart of Southwest Virginia.
Morgan previously pled guilty to one count of conspiring to distribute a measurable quantity of methamphetamine. Court records reveal he orchestrated the shipment of packages containing the drug from California to his father’s address in Roanoke. Once delivered, Morgan Jr. took charge of distribution, funneling cash back into the operation and splitting profits with his father, William Morgan Sr., who has also been convicted in the same conspiracy.
“Methamphetamine is a dangerously addictive substance that ruins lives and communities,” said United States Attorney John P. Fishwick Jr. “We must continue to stop those who traffic in this dangerous substance.” The statement underscores federal efforts to dismantle supply chains feeding the opioid and stimulant crisis across rural Virginia.
Assistant United States Attorney Andrew Bassford, who prosecuted the case, laid out the evidence during earlier hearings: Morgan Jr. used family ties and mail routes to mask the drug operation. The U.S. Postal Inspection Service, working alongside the Drug Enforcement Administration and local forces, traced the illicit packages through forensic and surveillance work, exposing the network’s logistics.
The investigation was a multi-agency push involving the Roanoke City Police Department, the Roanoke HIDTA Task Force, the Virginia State Police, and federal narcotics agents. Authorities say the collaboration was key to identifying distribution patterns and seizing evidence that led to convictions of Morgan Jr. and others involved.
Morgan Jr. now begins a 60-month sentence with no early release. His father, William Morgan Sr., awaits sentencing on related charges. The case remains active as federal prosecutors continue to target suppliers and middlemen in what they call an ongoing crackdown on transnational drug trafficking into Central and Southwest Virginia.
