Sentence Handed Down in Disturbing Online Exploitation Case

A 53-year-old Middletown man has been sentenced to a staggering 26 years in federal prison for his role in coercing and exploiting minor girls online. William Scott Elam, who posed as a 14-year-old boy to manipulate his victims, was found guilty of 10 counts of coercion and enticement, as well as one count of sexual exploitation of children.

The disturbing case, which spanned approximately four years, involved Elam forming online relationships with minor females in at least seven states. His victims, who ranged in age from 10 to 16, were often vulnerable individuals who had previously struggled with self-harm, body issues, or other social issues.

Elam’s method of manipulation was particularly egregious, as he would often threaten to harm himself if his victims did not comply with his demands. In some cases, he even instructed his victims to self-harm via live video calls. He also coerced his victims into sending him live sexual material, threatening to leak naked images he had obtained of them if they did not comply.

Law enforcement officials have identified at least 10 victims in this case, and Elam was arrested in October 2023. The sentence, handed down by U.S. District Judge Jeffery P. Hopkins, is a stark reminder of the consequences of online exploitation.

“There are real-life consequences to actions taken online,” said U.S. Attorney Dominick S. Gerace II. “Predators like Elam hide behind a computer screen while preying on vulnerable children. But the harm they cause is real, and so is the significant amount of time they will spend in federal prison to account for those actions.”

Assistant United States Attorney Kyle J. Healey represented the United States in this case, working in conjunction with the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to bring Elam to justice.

The sentence serves as a warning to would-be predators who think they can hide behind the anonymity of the internet. It is a testament to the dedication of law enforcement officials and their commitment to protecting vulnerable members of society.
