Willie Hunter, Jr. Sentenced to 3 Years for Unlawfully Possessing A Firearm
Fort Myers, FL – In a move to address the growing issue of gun violence, U.S. District Judge Sheri Polster Chappell has sentenced Willie Hunter, Jr. to three years in federal prison for unlawfully possessing a firearm. The court also ordered Hunter to forfeit the firearm used in the offense.
Hunter, 22, of Fort Myers, entered a guilty plea on February 28, 2024. His sentence is a harsh reminder of the consequences of breaking federal laws. As a convicted felon, Hunter is prohibited from possessing firearms or ammunition under federal law.
According to court documents, the incident occurred on November 30, 2023. Officers from the Fort Myers Police Department were on patrol in the area of Palm Avenue and Douglas Street when they observed a vehicle with illegal dark window tint. An officer initiated a traffic stop, but the vehicle accelerated into the parking lot of a convenience store.
After reaching the parking lot, the front passenger, later identified as Hunter, got out of the vehicle and proceeded into the convenience store. The vehicle then fled, with Hunter walking into the store. Officers located Hunter in the convenience store while additional officers pursued the vehicle. The vehicle was later found abandoned, and officers located two firearms inside. Fingerprint analysis linked Hunter to possessing one of those firearms.
Hunter’s prior felony convictions include possession of firearm by a delinquent and aggravated assault with deadly weapon. His actions demonstrate a blatant disregard for the law and pose a significant threat to public safety.
The case was investigated by the Fort Myers Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. It was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Mark Morgan. This case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program aimed at reducing violent crime and gun violence in local communities.
