TYLER, Texas – A gritty search warrant at a Wills Point residence has led to a federal conviction for Michael Jack Callaway, 36, who pleaded guilty today in U.S. Magistrate Judith Guthrie’s court to possessing an unregistered short barrel shotgun.
The Department of Justice announced that Callaway admitted to the felony charge after authorities discovered the weapon during a search warrant executed on August 22, 2012, at his Wills Point home. The Van Zandt County Drug Task Force uncovered the shotgun among numerous firearms and hundreds of rounds of ammunition.
Callaway has been indicted by a federal grand jury on November 7, 2012, for the offense. As per the charges, he must forfeit all seized weapons and ammunition to the United States Attorney’s Office.
The defendant faces up to ten years in prison and a $250,000 fine, with a sentencing hearing date yet to be determined.
This case was jointly investigated by the Van Zandt County Drug Task Force and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, Tyler Office. Assistant U.S. Attorney Jim Noble is prosecuting the case.
