Desmond Simpson, Hobbs Act Robbery, North Carolina 2012

A federal jury has convicted Desmond Simpson, 29, of Wilmington, for his role in a violent robbery that left a victim with significant head injuries. Simpson was found guilty of Hobbs Act Robbery and carrying and brandishing a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence.

According to the investigation, on April 25, 2012, Simpson robbed a Papa John’s delivery person and repeatedly beat the individual in the head with the butt of a handgun. The victim required numerous staples to treat their injuries.

Simpson was connected to the crime through DNA evidence. The investigation was conducted by the Wilmington Police Department and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Simpson faces a maximum sentence of 20 years imprisonment for the Hobbs Act Robbery and not less than 7 years and up to life imprisonment for the 924(c) conviction.

Assistant United States Attorney Jane Jackson and Special Assistant United States Attorney Charity Wilson prosecuted the case. Wilson is a prosecutor with the District 5 District Attorney’s Office and has been assigned to the United States Attorney’s Office to prosecute violent crime, firearm-related cases, and narcotic crimes.

The case is a reminder of the violent nature of some crimes and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions. Simpson’s conviction is a significant step towards justice for the victim and their family.

The sentencing date for Simpson has not been scheduled yet, but it is expected to take place at a later date.

Elizabeth City, NC – United States Attorney Thomas G. Walker announced the conviction of Desmond Simpson in federal court. The case was tried before United States District Judge Terrence W. Boyle.
