Windsor Woman Sentenced for ‘Grab and Go’ Theft Scheme
A 22-year-old woman from Windsor was sentenced to 36 months in federal prison for her role in a string of ‘grab and go’ thefts from high-end retail stores across the Northeast.
Aysia Ryan, who was part of a network of individuals, committed more than 50 thefts from stores in Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, and New York between 2019 and 2020. The crimes resulted in losses of over $40,000.
The ‘grab and go’ scheme involves perpetrators entering a store, grabbing as many items as they can carry, and leaving without paying. The stolen merchandise is then transported to Connecticut and sold online or on the street.
Ryan pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to transport and possess stolen property in April 2021. She has been detained since November 2020 and was ordered to pay $22,900 in restitution.
The investigation, dubbed ‘Operation American Steal,’ was a multi-agency effort involving the Federal Bureau of Investigation and several local police departments. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Margaret Donovan and Brendan Keefe are prosecuting the case.
Ryan’s sentence is a result of her involvement in at least 23 thefts, with losses totaling over $40,000. Her case serves as a warning to those involved in similar schemes that the consequences can be severe.
As the Grimy Times investigates the depths of organized retail crime, it’s clear that those who think they can get away with it will face the full force of the law. Aysia Ryan’s sentence is a reminder that ‘grab and go’ thefts have real consequences and will not be tolerated.
