Wisconsin Man Sentenced for Illegal Firearm Possession

LEXINGTON, Ky. – A Milwaukee native, Alexander Laykovich, 27, has been locked up for 48 months after being caught with a cache of firearms and explosives in Kentucky. The sentencing comes after Laykovich was flagged by Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office Deputy as he barreled towards Fort Knox from Wisconsin, intent on visiting the military base.

Upon his arrest, Laykovich was found to be in possession of body armor, recording equipment, knives, a gas canister, and eight firearms. Six of these were semiautomatics, capable of accepting large magazines, along with ammunition. A subsequent search uncovered 15 additional firearms in his storage unit and delivery boxes back in Wisconsin.

Laykovich had been deemed mentally defective by the National Instant Criminal Background Check System (NICS) in January 2023, leading to a lifetime ban on firearm purchases. Despite this, he was caught with weapons purchased before the prohibition or by his girlfriend afterward. Under federal law, Laykovich must serve 85 percent of his sentence and will be under U.S. Probation Office supervision for five years upon release.

Acting United States Attorney Paul McCaffrey emphasized the gravity of illegal firearm possession, stating, “This case reflects the strong collaboration between our office and our federal, state, and local partners.” Special Agent in Charge Olivia Olson from the FBI Louisville Field Office praised law enforcement’s swift actions in thwarting a potential act of violence at Fort Knox.

The sentence was jointly announced by Acting U.S. Attorney McCaffrey, FBI Special Agent in Charge Olson; John Nokes, Special Agent in Charge, ATF, Louisville Field Division; Col. Phillip J. Burnett, Jr., Commissioner of the Kentucky State Police; and Sheriff Shawn Hines, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office. The investigation was a collaborative effort between the FBI, ATF, KSP, and Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Kate Dieruf leading the prosecution.
