A South Dakota woman is facing serious charges after allegedly altering a money order to her own benefit.
Jamie Walking Eagle, 27, of Mission, South Dakota, was indicted by a federal grand jury on August 21, 2013, for fraudulently altering a United States Postal Money Order.
The indictment alleges that Walking Eagle purchased a money order made payable to Estes Park Court in the amount of $215.00 on November 5, 2012. She then allegedly altered the money order to make it payable to herself.
The maximum penalty upon conviction is up to 5 years in custody and/or a $250,000 fine, 3 years of supervised release, and $100 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund. Restitution may also be ordered.
Walking Eagle appeared before U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno on February 10, 2014, and pled not guilty to the indictment. She was released on bond pending trial and a trial date has not been set.
The investigation is being conducted by the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Marie H. Ruettgers prosecuting the case.
The charge is merely an accusation and Walking Eagle is presumed innocent until and unless proven guilty.
