Woman Pepper Sprays Mail Carrier in Racist Attack

A Monrovia woman has been arrested for allegedly pepper spraying a mail carrier in a racist attack, leaving the victim with severe pain and blurred vision.

According to authorities, Ruby Guerrero Valenzuela, 64, assaulted the United States Postal Service employee on April 20 in Pasadena. Valenzuela had apparently believed that the mail carrier’s vehicle had cut her off at an intersection, leading her to shout obscenities and follow the victim to her next stop.

At the victim’s next stop, Valenzuela ran up to her and screamed additional obscenities and racial epithets before spraying the victim in the face with pepper spray, causing severe pain and blurred vision.

“The evidence in this case indicates that a postal carrier carrying out her duties was the victim of an unwarranted attack,” said United States Attorney Eileen M. Decker. “All federal employees should be able to carry out their duties without fear of attacks based on the performance of those duties.”

Valenzuela is charged with assaulting a federal employee in a manner that inflicts bodily injury, a crime that carries a statutory maximum penalty of 20 years in federal prison.

The case was investigated by the United States Postal Inspection Service, with assistance from the Pasadena Police Department and the Monrovia Police Department. Valenzuela is expected to make her initial appearance in United States District Court today.

A criminal complaint contains allegations that a defendant has committed a crime. Every defendant is presumed to be innocent until and unless proven guilty in court.
