Woman Sentenced for Assaulting Federal Officer

Delanita LaClair, a 49-year-old woman from Eagle Butte, was sentenced to 3 years probation and a $300 fine for assaulting a federal officer, according to a recent court ruling.

The incident occurred on June 3, 2011, when LaClair and her co-defendant ran towards officers who were arresting another individual. Despite repeated orders to stop, LaClair continued to approach the officers and was intercepted by one of them. She physically resisted arrest, leading to her indictment for Assaulting a Federal Officer.

LaClair was indicted by a federal grand jury on August 22, 2012, and later pleaded guilty to the charge on January 24, 2013. U.S. District Judge Roberto A. Lange handed down the sentence on the same day.

As part of her sentence, LaClair was also ordered to pay a $25 special assessment and perform 40 hours of community service. She must also write a letter of apology to the Cheyenne River Sioux Tribal Police officers involved in the incident.

The case was investigated by the Cheyenne River Law Enforcement Services, with First Assistant U.S. Attorney Randolph J. Seiler prosecuting the case.

U.S. Attorney Brendan V. Johnson commented on the case, but no statement was provided in this report. This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of respecting law enforcement and following their instructions during high-pressure situations.

LaClair’s sentence is a stern warning to those who would disregard the authority of law enforcement. The community can rest assured that those who break the law will face consequences.

This case is a prime example of the ongoing efforts to maintain law and order in our communities. We will continue to report on similar cases and keep the public informed about the actions of those who break the law.
