In a shocking turn of events, a South Bend woman has been sentenced to 102 months in prison for her role in a brazen Hobbs Act robbery and brandishing a firearm during a crime of violence.
Crystal Egan, 33, was sentenced before United States District Court Chief Judge Jon DeGuilio after pleading guilty to the charges. The sentence was handed down by Acting United States Attorney Tina L. Nommay.
According to documents, Egan participated in two armed robberies, including a bank and a tobacco store. She aided in planning the robberies and was the driver for each. On November 18, 2019, Egan’s co-defendants Armand White and Joshua Gant entered a Mishawaka tobacco store wearing masks and armed with handguns while she stayed behind in the car. They brandished their firearms and demanded money from the clerk, who complied with their demands.
The trio then split the proceeds at a house, with Egan and her co-defendants driving to the residence in the getaway car. Just two days later, on November 20, 2019, Egan planned and drove her co-defendants Armand White and Daniel Scott to a Federal Credit Union in South Bend to conduct another robbery. When they arrived, White and Scott entered with faces covered and firearms while demanding money, which they obtained after fleeing in the vehicle driven by Egan.
Egan’s co-defendants have also been sentenced or are awaiting sentencing for their roles in the crime. Joshua Gant was sentenced to 90 months in prison on July 8, 2021, while Armand White is awaiting sentencing currently scheduled for October 2021. Daniel Scott is also awaiting sentencing, currently set for September 2021.
The case was the result of an investigation conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation with the assistance of the Mishawaka and South Bend Police Departments. Assistant United States Attorney Kimberly Schultz prosecuted the case.
Egan’s sentence serves as a warning to those who engage in violent crimes, and we will continue to work tirelessly to bring justice to our communities.
