A Wanblee woman has been sentenced to 120 months’ custody for her role in the death of her infant son.
Kehuanna Poitra, 31, was given the sentence by Chief U.S. District Judge Jeffrey L. Viken on January 3, 2014.
Poitra was also ordered to pay $100 to the Victim Assistance Fund as part of her sentence.
The charges stem from July and August, 2011, when Poitra failed to properly care for her infant son, resulting in his death.
The infant was sent home from Rapid City Regional Hospital with strict instructions for his care, including monitoring for an apnea/Bradycardia machine, medication, and specialized formula.
Poitra failed to provide this care, leading to the infant’s extreme malnourishment, dehydration, and ultimately pneumonia, which caused his death.
Poitra had previously pled guilty to the charges on October 3, 2013.
The case was investigated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Sarah B. Collins prosecuting the case.
Poitra was immediately turned over to the custody of the U.S. Marshal after the sentencing.
