Woman Sentenced for Simple Assault and Aiding and Abetting
A White River woman has been sentenced for her role in a brutal assault on a victim. Ashley Vanderwalker, age 25, was convicted of Simple Assault and Aiding and Abetting.
On April 3, 2011, Vanderwalker and others attacked the victim with a bat, leaving them severely injured. The Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services conducted the investigation, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Marie H. Ruettgers prosecuted the case.
Vanderwalker was indicted by a federal grand jury on April 12, 2013, and pled guilty to the charge on June 17, 2013. U.S. Magistrate Judge Mark A. Moreno sentenced Vanderwalker to 12 months’ probation and ordered her to pay $10 to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The case against Vanderwalker was a joint effort between law enforcement agencies and federal prosecutors. The Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services worked tirelessly to bring the perpetrators to justice, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Marie H. Ruettgers secured a guilty plea from Vanderwalker.
Vanderwalker’s sentence is a stark reminder that violent crimes will not be tolerated in our communities. The Federal Crime Victims Fund provides critical support to victims of crime and their families.
