Grimy Times has learned that a Fort Thompson woman was sentenced to 33 months in prison for her role in a high speed chase that resulted in the death of her boyfriend.
Twenty-year-old Leigha Koster was behind the wheel of a vehicle that crashed while she was driving drunk on July 28, 2012. Her boyfriend was ejected from the vehicle and died at the scene.
Koster took off during a traffic stop, leading law enforcement on a high speed chase that exceeded 100 miles per hour. The chase ended when Koster lost control of the vehicle while attempting to make a turn.
Koster was indicted for Involuntary Manslaughter and Child Abuse by a federal grand jury in August 2012. She was sentenced by US District Judge Roberto A. Lange on January 7, 2013.
Koster was also ordered to pay $100 to the Victim Assistance Fund and $16,995.18 in restitution. She will serve two years of supervised release after her prison sentence is completed.
The investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Bureau of Indian Affairs. Assistant US Attorney Meghan N. Dilges prosecuted the case.
Koster was immediately taken into custody by the US Marshal after her sentencing. This case serves as a reminder of the dangers of driving under the influence and the consequences that can result from such reckless behavior.
