Worrell Gets 30 Months for Overton Gun Heist

LAS VEGAS, NV – A brazen gun heist in Overton, Nevada, landed Alexis Breanna Worrell, a Las Vegas resident with a prior felony conviction, a 30-month federal prison sentence today. U.S. District Judge Jennifer A. Dorsey also tacked on two years of supervised release following Worrell’s incarceration for her role in the theft of 38 firearms from a Federal Firearms Licensee (FFL) and the subsequent illegal sale of at least 20 of those weapons. Federal prosecutors had pushed for a significantly longer sentence of 108 months, arguing for the severity of the crime and its potential impact on public safety.

Worrell, who pleaded guilty to one count of theft of firearms from a licensee and one count of possession of stolen firearms, wasn’t working alone. Co-defendant Dennis James Caputo, also of Las Vegas, received a six-year prison sentence after entering a guilty plea to the same charges. The pair’s coordinated attack on the Overton FFL business, detailed in court documents, highlights a growing trend of organized theft targeting legal gun stores.

The crime unfolded on July 24, 2023. According to court records, Caputo breached the FFL business after hours by climbing onto the roof and cutting a hole. He then directed Worrell to wait nearby at a gas station. Once inside, Caputo disabled the alarm system and began systematically looting firearms from displays, loading them onto a bed sheet and into a rifle case he found within the store. He also utilized two five-gallon buckets to haul out the stolen weapons. Worrell admitted to assisting Caputo in loading the firearms into their vehicle.

The stolen firearms didn’t stay hidden for long. Between July 25, 2023, and approximately September 5, 2023, Worrell and Caputo actively sold and transferred the stolen guns to individuals on the streets of Las Vegas. To date, law enforcement has recovered nine of those firearms, tracing them back to five prohibited persons already involved in criminal activity. Disturbingly, four of the stolen firearms remain unaccounted for, posing an ongoing threat to public safety.

This isn’t Worrell’s first brush with the law. She previously faced conviction for methamphetamine trafficking in Clark County, Nevada. Caputo’s criminal history is equally extensive, including prior felony drug convictions in Oregon’s Douglas, Clackamas, and Coos counties, as well as a burglary conviction in Cowlitz County, Washington. Both defendants clearly demonstrated a pattern of disregard for the law, culminating in this serious federal offense.

Acting United States Attorney Sigal Chattah for the District of Nevada announced the sentencing. The case was a joint effort, investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department. Assistant U.S. Attorney Dan Cowhig led the prosecution, securing convictions and bringing these dangerous criminals to justice. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the ongoing efforts to stem the flow of illegal firearms in Nevada.
