ROCHESTER, N.Y. – In a chilling turn of events, Daniel Hays, 42, of Bliss, NY, has been sentenced to five years in prison and 10 years supervised release for his despicable attempt to have sex with an 11-year-old girl.
Hays was caught after engaging in explicit online chats and texts, believing he was corresponding with the child. In reality, the child was a New York State Police Investigator working with Homeland Security. The predator’s twisted plans were thwarted when Hays traveled two hours to meet his supposed victim on May 11, 2021.
Upon arrival at the meeting place, law enforcement officials arrested Hays and discovered he had purchased candy as a gift for the young girl. Assistant U.S. Attorney Kyle Rossi handled the case with vigor, ensuring justice was served.
The investigation leading to Hays’ capture was spearheaded by the New York State Police under Major Barry Chase and Homeland Security Investigations under Acting Special Agent-in-Charge Matthew Scarpino.
With this sentence, the community can breathe a little easier knowing that a predator has been removed from society. Hays will now have to face the consequences of his heinous actions.
