NEWARK, NJ – Wyzier Peterson, 25, of Paterson, New Jersey, will spend the next 12 and a half years in federal prison after pleading guilty to distributing fentanyl that directly led to the death of another individual. U.S. District Judge Brian R. Martinotti handed down the 150-month sentence today, closing a case that highlights the deadly consequences of the ongoing fentanyl crisis.
The grim details revealed in court documents show that on June 30, 2019, Peterson sold a deadly mixture of heroin and fentanyl to the victim. That victim subsequently ingested the drugs and succumbed to an overdose, a tragic outcome that prosecutors directly tied to Peterson’s actions. The case was presented as a clear example of a drug dealer bearing responsibility for the harm caused by their product.
This wasn’t a street-level hustle gone wrong; it was a calculated distribution that ended in death. Peterson’s guilty plea came by way of videoconference, a testament to the evolving methods of justice in the federal system. Beyond the lengthy prison term, Judge Martinotti also imposed a three-year period of supervised release upon Peterson’s eventual return to society, a measure intended to monitor his behavior and prevent further criminal activity.
Federal investigators say the case was a key component of an Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces (OCDETF) operation, a multi-agency effort aimed at dismantling high-level criminal organizations. The OCDETF initiative leverages intelligence and collaboration between various law enforcement agencies to target the source of illicit drug trafficking.
The investigation, which led to Peterson’s conviction, involved a coordinated effort from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF), Newark Field Division, the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), the New Jersey State Police, the Paterson Police Department, and the Passaic County Prosecutor’s Office. The U.S. Marshals Service, Bergen County Sheriff’s Office, and the Belleville and Livingston police departments also provided support.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Francesca Liquori, from the Special Prosecutions Division, spearheaded the government’s case, meticulously building the evidence that secured Peterson’s conviction. The sentence serves as a stark warning to those involved in the distribution of fentanyl and other dangerous narcotics: federal authorities are actively pursuing these cases and will hold offenders accountable for the devastating consequences of their actions. The full case file is available through the Department of Justice.
