Xavier Sean Boyd, 20, of Jennings, and Roy Lee Jones, 22, have admitted to robbing three U.S. Postal Service letter carriers in St. Louis County in 2022.
The two men pleaded guilty in U.S. District Court in St. Louis to various charges, including robbery, possession and brandishing of a firearm, and theft of a mail key.
According to court documents, Boyd and Jones were part of a group of five young adults who conspired to steal checks from the mail, alter them, and deposit them into the accounts of third parties. However, they were unsuccessful in recruiting third parties and used their own accounts instead.
On June 1, 2022, Boyd robbed a U.S. Postal Carrier at gunpoint on Chambers Road in St. Louis County, stealing the ‘arrow’ key that opens collection boxes. Four days later, the group used that key to steal mail from collection boxes in Berkeley, West Florissant, Normandy, Overland, and Ferguson.
On June 7, 2022, Boyd and Jones deposited $19,199.60 in stolen checks into Jones’ credit union account. However, when they tried to withdraw $19,200 the next day, they only obtained a total of $8,500. The remainder was reclaimed when the fraudulent deposits were discovered.
On June 9, 2022, Boyd was driving his mother’s SUV when Jones robbed another postal carrier of his arrow key. Boyd then robbed a third carrier less than 20 minutes later, but the carrier noted the license plate of Boyd’s mother’s car and police spotted the vehicle within minutes.
A high-speed chase ensued, resulting in Boyd crashing the SUV and both men fleeing, carrying pistols. Police tackled Boyd within feet of the SUV and arrested Jones on the front steps of a nearby day care center.
Jones is scheduled to be sentenced on November 15, while Boyd is scheduled to be sentenced on December 18. The robbery charge is punishable by up to 25 years in prison, the theft charge is punishable by up to 10 years in prison, and the firearm charges carry a penalty of at least seven years, consecutive to all other charges.
The U.S. Postal Inspection Service and the St. Louis County Police investigated the case, with Assistant U.S. Attorney Jason Dunkel prosecuting.
