Yakama Nation, Violent Crime, Washington 2022

Yakima, Washington – In a disturbing trend, the Confederated Tribes and Bands of the Yakama Nation are dealing with a surge in violent crime. The latest statistics reveal a growing concern for the safety of women in the area.

According to a recent announcement by Vanessa R. Waldref, United States Attorney for the Eastern District of Washington, the Yakama Nation has been awarded $1,000,000 to target violent crimes against women. Additionally, the nation will receive $609,751 in federal funding to provide services to crime victims.

The $1,000,000 grant was awarded by the Office on Violence Against Women, Indian Tribal Governments Program. This program provides funds to Tribal nations to develop and enhance strategies for curtailing violent crimes and increasing the safety of Native American women.

The Yakama Nation is one of just thirty tribes to receive funding in 2022 through the Indian Tribal Governments Program. This recognition highlights the need for continued support in addressing violent crime in Indian country.

In a statement, U.S. Attorney Waldref emphasized the importance of working together with federal, state, local, and Tribal partners to address violent crime on the Yakama Nation. She noted that the citizens of the Yakama Nation deserve nothing less and that the federal government remains committed to combating violent crime in Indian country.
