Washington DC – In a shocking turn of events, Bernard Matthews, a 45-year-old Washington DC resident, was sentenced to 45 years in prison for the brutal murder of 22-year-old Diamonte Green in Southeast DC.
A Superior Court jury found Matthews guilty of first-degree murder while armed, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, unlawful possession of a firearm, and carrying a pistol without a license on August 12, 2024, before the Honorable Michael O’Keefe.
The heinous crime took place on February 16, 2021, when Matthews sought out the victim, who was threatening his son via Instagram, and shot him eight times inside the entryway of an apartment building at 33rd and C Street SE.
According to the evidence presented at trial, Matthews walked several blocks to find the victim, who was unarmed at the time of the shooting.
The Metropolitan Police Department and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia investigated the case, which was prosecuted and tried by Assistant U.S. Attorneys Andrea Coronado and Kathleen Gibbons.
U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief Pamela A. Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department announced the sentencing, which brings closure to the family and loved ones of the victim.
The case serves as a sobering reminder of the devastating consequences of violence and the importance of holding perpetrators accountable for their actions.
