Yang Chia Tien, a 62-year-old man from Queens, New York, was sentenced to 69 months in federal prison on March 25, 2014, for bribing a public official.
Tien, also known as Andrew Tien, was found guilty of making three payments totaling $51,000 to an individual he believed to be an immigration official in an attempt to obtain green cards for illegal aliens from Malaysia and China. However, the recipient of the payments was an undercover law enforcement officer with Homeland Security Investigations.
The prosecution resulted from a joint undercover investigation by ICE-Homeland Security Investigations and the New York State Police. The case was prosecuted by Assistant United States Attorney Sean O’Dowd.
Tien’s sentence comes after a federal jury in Albany convicted him of three counts of bribery of a public official on November 14, 2013.
The New York State Police, Homeland Security Investigations, and the United States Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of New York worked together to bring Tien to justice.
The case serves as a reminder of the importance of holding public officials accountable for their actions and the consequences of attempting to bribe them.
