Aldawsari, a 21-year-old Texas Tech University student at the time, was accused of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction and attempting to provide material support to terrorists. The charges were related to his plans to build an explosive device using hydrogen peroxide and his connections to al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula.
According to court documents, Aldawsari had been in contact with al-Qaeda leaders and had attempted to obtain materials to build a bomb. He was arrested on February 24, 2012, at his apartment in Lubbock, Texas, after receiving a package containing a hydrogen peroxide-based substance.
The case was significant not only because of the seriousness of the charges but also because of the defendant’s connections to the Said family, who were the subject of a high-profile kidnapping case in 2000. Yaser Esam Said, the father of the three kidnapped boys, had been accused of murdering his sons in Texas.
Aldawsari’s case ultimately ended in a guilty plea. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole. The case served as a reminder of the ongoing threat of terrorism and the importance of vigilance in preventing such crimes.
