Yoga To The People Leader Gumucio Sentenced for Tax Fraud

GRIMY NEWS: Gregory Gumucio, the charismatic leader of Yoga to the People (YTTP), has been sentenced to four years in prison for a multi-year tax evasion scheme. The Southern District of New York’s U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton announced the sentence today. Gumucio, who made nearly $3.5 million from 2012 to 2020 without filing taxes or paying income, admitted his guilt on October 4, 2024.

YTTP, once a donation-based venture and now a major player in the yoga industry with studios across the U.S., generated over $20 million during its peak. Gumucio’s lavish lifestyle, including foreign travel, luxury accommodations, NFL season tickets, and country club memberships, was fueled by this illegal income. Despite his substantial earnings, Gumucio failed to file corporate tax returns for YTTP.

At 64 years old, Gumucio of Colorado Springs will also serve three years of supervised release following his prison term and is ordered to pay $2,729,407.10 in restitution to the IRS. The case underscores the determination of law enforcement to crack down on tax evasion among business leaders.

The investigation was a collaborative effort involving the IRS Criminal Investigation’s New York and Dallas Field Offices, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Inspector General, and Special Agents from the Southern District of New York’s U.S. Attorney’s Office. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Rushmi Bhaskaran and Michael Neff led the prosecution.

With this conviction, Gumucio is held accountable for his actions, and tax-paying citizens are reminded that law enforcement is vigilant in pursuing those who try to game the system.
