Yogurt Mogul Burns Down His Own Shop
Dallas, TX – In a shocking case of arson, Edgar Dalmiro Diaz, 56, has been sentenced to 60 months in federal prison for intentionally setting fire to his own yogurt business, "Three Happy Cows".
According to documents filed in the case, Diaz set fire to the building at 2750 Northhaven Drive in northwest Dallas in mid-March 2013. The fire damaged the building and its contents, causing $1,508,533 in damages. The businesses located in the building were engaged in activities that affected interstate commerce.
The investigation, led by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and Dallas Fire-Rescue, revealed that Diaz had intentionally set the fire. Diaz pleaded guilty in January 2014 to an indictment charging one count of malicious use of explosive materials.
U.S. District Judge Jane J. Boyle ordered Diaz to pay $1,508,533 in restitution in addition to his five-year prison sentence. Diaz is expected to be remanded into federal custody immediately.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Taly Haffar prosecuted the case, which was announced by Acting U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Texas, John Parker.
Diaz’s actions not only destroyed his own business but also caused significant damage to the surrounding area. The sentence serves as a reminder that arson is a serious crime with severe consequences.
As the yogurt entrepreneur begins his five-year prison sentence, the community can breathe a sigh of relief that justice has been served in this case of intentional arson.
