PITTSBURGH, Pa. – In a stunning revelation of airport security breaches, Luis Rojas Cay, 26, from Youngstown, Ohio, has been indicted by a federal grand jury for attempting to smuggle three firearms into the skies.
The accused, Rojas Cay, faces two counts of firearms charges: possession of a firearm by a felon and carrying a weapon on an aircraft. According to the Indictment, Cay was planning to fly from Pittsburgh International Airport to San Juan, Puerto Rico, when authorities uncovered his sinister plot.
On April 26, 2024, Rojas Cay’s luggage contained not one but three firearms: a loaded 9mm semiautomatic handgun and two unloaded handguns. In addition to the guns, he had nearly 200 rounds of ammunition, meticulously concealed in foil-backed tape-wrapped packages within a lined metal briefcase.
‘Luis Rojas Cay’s attempt to board an airplane with multiple firearms, one of which was loaded, is a clear threat to public safety,’ U.S. Attorney Eric G. Olshan declared. ‘This office and our law enforcement partners are committed to keeping these kinds of weapons off airplanes and away from unsuspecting citizens.’
Should Rojas Cay be convicted, he faces up to 15 years in prison and a fine of $250,000. Assistant United States Attorney Nicole Vasquez Schmitt is handling the prosecution.
This investigation was conducted by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Allegheny County Police Department, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. The case is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program dedicated to reducing violent crime and making neighborhoods safer across all levels of law enforcement.
