Zachary A. Myers, Asset Forfeiture, Indiana 2023

GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE

Indiana’s U.S. Attorney’s Office has made a staggering haul in Fiscal Year 2023, collecting over $25 million in asset forfeiture and financial litigation debt. The office, led by U.S. Attorney Zachary A. Myers, seized $15,244,637 through asset forfeiture actions and $10,189,645 through civil and criminal debt collection actions.

The massive sum is a testament to the office’s dedication to protecting the public and recovering funds for the victims of federal crime. As U.S. Attorney Myers noted, ‘We are proud to have partnered with so many local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to compensate victims and hold criminals financially accountable.’

Under the law, defendants who commit certain federal crimes are required to pay restitution to victims who have suffered physical injury or financial loss. While restitution is paid directly to the victim, criminal fines and felony assessments are paid to the Crime Victims Fund, which distributes the collected funds to federal and state victim compensation and victim assistance programs.

The forfeited assets deposited into the Assets Forfeiture Fund are used to restore funds to crime victims and for a variety of law enforcement purposes. U.S. Attorney Myers thanked Civil Division Chief Shelese Woods and Asset Recovery Unit Chief Kelly Rota, as well as the office’s attorneys and support professionals for their diligent efforts to uphold the law and recover funds for victims of crime.

With this haul, the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Indiana has demonstrated its commitment to holding wrongdoers accountable and recovering funds for victims of federal crime.

Details of the seized funds and the efforts of the U.S. Attorney’s Office are a stark reminder of the importance of law enforcement in protecting our communities and restoring justice to those who have been victimized.
