Ghost Gun Dealer Sentenced to 12 Years in Prison

In a brazen case of illegal firearms dealing, Zachary Grosser, 29, of Kalamazoo County, Michigan, has been sentenced to 12 years in federal prison for manufacturing and distributing firearms in West Michigan. The sentencing took place on March 15, 2023 in Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Grosser’s crimes included selling guns to individuals who were legally forbidden to possess them, making and selling ‘ghost guns,’ designed to be untraceable. His advertisements explicitly stated that the guns were ‘untraceable.’

According to U.S. Attorney Mark Totten, Grosser’s actions were ‘extremely dangerous to the community.’ Totten emphasized that operating an unlicensed firearms dealership is against the law and that Grosser’s sentence sends a clear message to would-be arms dealers.

In early 2021, law enforcement discovered Grosser’s illegal arms-dealing and manufacturing business from his Kalamazoo County residence. Through surveillance and searches of his trash, police found evidence of 3D-printed ‘ghost guns’ and handwritten instructions on how to complete them. When investigators searched Grosser’s home in August 2021, they found a subterranean workshop filled with gunsmithing machines, tools, and parts, including multiple 3D-printers.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, and the Kalamazoo Valley Enforcement Team investigated the case. Assistant U.S. Attorney Patrick J. Castle prosecuted the case.

Grosser’s sentence is a result of his illegal activities, which included manufacturing and distributing over 40 firearms. His actions not only put the community at risk but also highlight the dangers of unregulated firearms dealing.
