Armed Robbery Rocks Topeka

A brazen armed robbery shook the streets of Topeka, Kansas, when a group of individuals stormed a Check Into Cash location, leaving a store clerk shaken and a community on high alert. The crime, which took place on June 4, 2014 at 3711 S.W. Plaza Drive, would eventually lead to the downfall of one of the perpetrators, Zennie Lee Vasser, II, a 32-year-old Topeka resident.

Vasser, along with co-defendants Charles Steele and Lamar Steele, the twin brother of Charles, planned the robbery. Vasser’s role in the crime was to hold open the door while Charles Steele brandished a firearm and forced the store clerk to give him money from the cash drawer. The planned getaway vehicle was to be driven by Lamar Steele.

On June 4, 2014, Vasser and his co-conspirators put their plan into action. However, their scheme was foiled when they were captured on video committing the crime. Investigators learned that Vasser was present with Steele and Steele’s twin brother, Lamar Steele, planned the robbery.

Vasser agreed to enter the store and engage the clerk while Charles Steele committed the robbery. Lamar Steel agreed to drive the getaway car. This brazen act would eventually catch up to Vasser, who was subsequently charged and convicted of aiding and abetting armed robbery.

Vasser, the 32-year-old Topeka resident, pleaded guilty to the crime and was sentenced to 43 months in federal prison. This outcome brings a sense of closure to the community, who can now rest assured that one of the perpetrators is being held accountable for their actions.

U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom commended the Topeka Police Department, the FBI, and Assistant U.S. Attorney Jared Maag for their diligent work on the case. Their efforts have ensured that Vasser will serve the time for his crimes, and the community can begin to heal.

As for Charles Steele, his sentencing is set for June 6. Lamar Steele is set for sentencing on March 14.
