Zoheb A. Deura, Embezzlement of Mail by U.S. Postal Service Employee, Connecticut 2020

In a shocking case of betrayal of public trust, Zoheb A. Deura, a 34-year-old former U.S. Postal Service supervisor from Stratford, pleaded guilty to embezzlement of mail by a U.S. Postal Service employee.

Deura waived his right to be indicted and pleaded guilty on an unspecified date before U.S. District Judge Kari A. Dooley in Bridgeport.

According to court documents and statements made in court, between February and April 2020, Deura stole numerous packages, including packages containing an Apple computer, PlayStation and Nintendo gaming devices, an iPhone, footwear, and clothing items, while he was employed as a supervisor at the U.S. Post Office in Middletown.

Deura has resigned from the U.S. Postal Service, and Judge Dooley scheduled sentencing for January 13, 2021, at which time Deura faces a maximum term of imprisonment of five years. He is currently released pending sentencing.

U.S. Attorney John H. Durham encouraged individuals who believe they are a victim of theft related to this case to file a complaint by calling 888-USPS-OIG, or by visiting https://www.uspsoig.gov/form/file-online-complaint.

The investigation is being conducted by the U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General, and the case is being prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert S. Ruff.

Deura’s actions have left many wondering how an individual in a position of trust could betray the public’s faith in the postal service. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance and accountability in all aspects of public service.
