Defendants charged with illegally re-entering the U.S. after deportation, including 377 with non-immigration criminal records, 289 with multiple deportations, and 85 with alien smuggling.
According to a report from the U.S. Attorney’s Office District of Arizona, 1,225 individuals were charged in February with illegally re-entering the United States after being deported. Of those, 377 had previously been convicted of non-immigration criminal offenses in the U.S.
Violent crime convictions were the most prevalent among those with non-immigration criminal records, with 82 individuals charged. This includes 7 individuals with sex offense convictions and 25 individuals with domestic violence convictions.
Property crime convictions and DUI convictions also appear on the list, with 53 and 123 individuals respectively charged. Drug crime convictions were also a factor, with 134 individuals charged.
Alien smuggling was also a significant factor, with 85 individuals charged in February.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office District of Arizona reports that these numbers represent prosecutions only and do not include individuals apprehended by immigration enforcement officials and subjected solely to administrative process.
The U.S. Attorney’s Office District of Arizona urges individuals to report any information about immigration crimes to the authorities.
