Money Laundering Scheme Unravels in Pennsylvania

A 41-year-old woman from Portage, Pennsylvania, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for her role in a brazen money laundering scheme.

Tonia Vaughn, the owner of Gary’s Steals and Deals, a store in Portage, has been convicted of conspiring to commit money laundering, according to Acting United States Attorney Soo C. Song.

United States District Judge Kim R. Gibson imposed the sentence on Vaughn, who was found guilty of working with her husband, Gary Vaughn, to launder money through their store.

The scheme involved customers bringing in new, stolen items of merchandise to the store, which would then be purchased by Gary’s Steals and Deals. The stolen merchandise was then listed for sale on Ebay or Amazon, with the proceeds used to purchase new stolen items or given to employees as proceeds.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Stephanie L. Haines prosecuted the case, which was investigated by the Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation and the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Laurel Highlands Resident Agency.

Vaughn’s sentence includes three years of supervised release following her 18-month prison term. The case serves as a reminder of the importance of vigilance in identifying and prosecuting financial crimes.
