PITTSBURGH – In a grim testament to the fight against drug trafficking in residential areas, Dara Haynie, 28, of Pittsburgh, has been sentenced to 16 months in federal prison for her role in drug dealing operations within a stone’s throw from a playground and public housing. United States Attorney Scott W. Brady announced the sentencing.
Haynie faced justice after being convicted at the conclusion of a jury trial in January 2019. The prosecution revealed that Haynie, along with her husband Quinshawn Haynie, was caught dealing fentanyl and heroin out of their public housing residence and across from a playground in Pittsburgh’s Garfield neighborhood during February and March 2017.
According to the evidence presented, the couple reportedly used some of their illicit proceeds to indulge in marijuana, cigarettes, and alcohol. Quinshawn Haynie was handed down a separate sentence of three years and four months (40 months) in prison earlier this year in April.
The prosecution was led by Assistant United States Attorneys Christy C. Wiegand and Craig W. Haller. The investigation leading to the couple’s conviction was a collaborative effort between the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, the Federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), and the Pennsylvania Board of Probation and Parole.
Haynie will also serve six years of supervised release following her prison term as part of her sentence. The case serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing battle against drug trafficking in communities where children play and families live.
The sentencing of Dara Haynie and Quinshawn Haynie underscores the commitment of law enforcement to protect neighborhoods from the scourge of drug dealing, especially when it endangers innocent lives, such as those of young children.
