GRIMY TIMES EXCLUSIVE – A grim reminder of the federal immigration laws comes as Morrisville, PA native Jose Chaves-Leiva, also known as ‘Jose Amando Chaves,’ faces charges for illegal reentry after deportation. The United States Attorney’s Office announced today that Chaves-Leiva has been charged by indictment for returning to the United States despite having been deported multiple times.
According to the Indictment, Chaves-Leiva, a Costa Rican citizen, was found in the U.S. on or about April 3, 2017, after having been deported from the country on separate occasions in 2008 and 2009. The charges are a stark testament to the government’s commitment to enforcing immigration laws.
Acting United States Attorney Louis D. Lappen emphasized the severity of the offense, stating that if convicted, Chaves-Leiva could face up to ten years in federal prison. This is a clear indication of the harsh penalties associated with illegal reentry after deportation.
The investigation into Chaves-Leiva was led by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE)’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO), while Assistant United States Attorney Terri Marinari will be handling the prosecution.
