“13 Years for String of Armed Robberies: Daquan Hampton Sentenced”
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In a string of brazen armed robberies that left a trail of destruction and fear in its wake, Daquan Hampton, 27, of Clover, South Carolina, was sentenced on Monday to 13 years in prison followed by three years of supervised release for his role in the crimes.
According to court documents and testimony, Hampton and an accomplice terrorized three businesses in Charlotte, North Carolina, on consecutive nights in June 2022. The string of robberies included a Waffle House, a Domino’s Pizza, and a Papa John’s Pizza, leaving behind a trail of blood, bruises, and shattered glass.
On June 8, 2022, Hampton and his accomplice robbed the Waffle House, pistol-whipping the victim in the side of the head and making off with cash and a fanny pack. Two days later, they struck again at the Domino’s Pizza, where they pistol-whipped an employee in the back of the head and fired three rounds at the safe, causing lacerations and bleeding. The following night, they robbed the Papa John’s Pizza, pistol-whipping an employee in the head and making off with $880 in cash.
Hampton’s reign of terror came to an end on June 14, 2022, when a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officer conducted a traffic stop of Hampton’s vehicle for a traffic violation. Inside the vehicle, police found a firearm, marijuana, $1,417 in cash, and two loaded Glock 23 magazines. Hampton was arrested and later pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit Hobbs Act robbery, Hobbs Act robbery and aiding and abetting, and possession and discharge of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence.
U.S. Attorney Dena J. King praised the FBI and CMPD for their investigation, saying, “This case is a testament to the tireless efforts of law enforcement to bring violent offenders to justice.” Assistant U.S. Attorneys Alfredo De La Rosa and Regina Pack prosecuted the case, which is part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a program bringing together all levels of law enforcement to reduce violent crime.
Hampton is currently in federal custody and will be transferred to the custody of the federal Bureau of Prisons upon designation of a federal facility. His 13-year sentence is a harsh reminder that armed robbery will not be tolerated in our communities.
This is a grim reminder that violent crime has no place in our society. We will continue to work tirelessly to bring those responsible to justice and make our communities safer for all.
