Daquan Hampton: 13 Years for Charlotte Armed Robberies

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – A Clover, South Carolina man will spend the next thirteen years behind bars for terrorizing Charlotte restaurant workers during a brazen string of armed robberies in June 2022. Daquan Hampton, 27, received his sentence Monday from U.S. District Court, followed by three years of supervised release. The sentence was announced by U.S. Attorney Dena J. King for the Western District of North Carolina, alongside officials from the FBI and Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD).

The spree began June 8th at a Charlotte Waffle House, where Hampton and an accomplice, both masked and armed, forced an employee inside at gunpoint. When the employee couldn’t immediately access the safe, Hampton escalated the violence, pistol-whipping the victim in the head before stealing a fanny pack. Just two days later, on June 10th, Hampton and his partner targeted a Domino’s Pizza, again brandishing black handguns. This time, the violence was even more severe. Hampton allegedly threatened to shoot employees while demanding access to the safe, ultimately firing three rounds at it – shrapnel from which wounded an employee’s hand. They made off with $225 in cash.

The pair didn’t stop there. On June 12th, a Papa John’s Pizza became their third target. Six occupants were forced to the floor as one suspect demanded money, while Hampton held them at gunpoint. Another employee received a brutal pistol-whipping when he struggled to open a register. The robbers fled with $880. The robberies were characterized by escalating violence and a callous disregard for the safety of the victims.

Hampton’s reign of terror ended June 14th after a CMPD officer pulled over his vehicle for a traffic violation. Attempting to ditch evidence, Hampton tossed a firearm during the stop, but was quickly apprehended. A search of the vehicle revealed not only the discarded weapon, but also marijuana, $1,417 in cash, and two loaded Glock 23 magazines. The evidence directly linked Hampton to the robberies.

Daquan Hampton ultimately pleaded guilty August 1st, 2023, to conspiracy to commit Hobbs Act robbery, Hobbs Act robbery and aiding and abetting, and possession and discharging of a firearm in furtherance of a crime of violence. Assistant U.S. Attorneys Alfredo De La Rosa and Regina Pack secured the conviction. Hampton is currently in federal custody and will be transferred to a Bureau of Prisons facility.

U.S. Attorney King lauded the joint investigation by the FBI and CMPD, highlighting the case as part of Project Safe Neighborhoods (PSN), a federal program designed to reduce violent crime. While Hampton is off the streets, the scars – both physical and emotional – left on the victims of these brazen robberies will likely linger for years to come. The Grimy Times will continue to follow this case and report on the fate of Hampton’s accomplice.
