Newark resident Malachi Jefferson, 25, has pleaded guilty to his role in a brazen bank fraud scheme, stealing checks sent through the mail and committing bank fraud in the process.
According to court documents, Jefferson’s conspirator, a U.S. Postal Service employee, stole checks from a Keansburg, New Jersey, post office between April 2022 and November 2022. The stolen checks were then deposited by Jefferson and his cohorts, allowing them to fraudulently obtain more than $150,000 from victim financial institutions.
Jefferson’s guilty plea comes after a extensive investigation led by the U.S. Postal Service – Office of Inspector General, the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, the Keansburg Police Department, the Hazlet Police Department, and the Monmouth County Prosecutor’s Office.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Francesca Liquori represented the government in the case, which has resulted in Jefferson facing a maximum sentence of 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $1 million.
Jefferson is scheduled to be sentenced on September 9, 2024, and will have to answer to the court for his role in the bank fraud conspiracy.
The case serves as a stark reminder of the importance of postal security and the need for vigilance against those who would seek to exploit the system for their own gain.
Jefferson’s guilty plea is a significant victory for law enforcement and a testament to the hard work and dedication of those who investigated this case.
