Andrew Chu, Child Pornography Possession, New Jersey 2024

A 33-year-old man from Middlesex County, New Jersey, has been charged with a serious crime that’s shaking the community to its core. Edison resident Andrew Chu, 33, is accused of possessing images of child sexual abuse, a charge that carries a mandatory minimum term of 10 years in prison and a maximum of 20 years in prison.

According to U.S. Attorney Philip R. Sellinger, Chu used his computer to view approximately 100 images of child sexual abuse, including depictions involving pre-pubescent children. These disturbing images were viewed between May 2023 and November 2023. Chu’s arrest is a stark reminder that child predators are lurking in every corner of society, hiding behind screens and pretending to be ordinary citizens.

But Chu is no ordinary citizen. In 2021, he was convicted of a similar crime in a prior federal prosecution in New Jersey. For a repeat offender like Chu, the stakes are much higher. The charge of possession of child pornography carries a harsh sentence, and it’s clear that the authorities are taking a zero-tolerance approach to this heinous crime.

The investigation that led to Chu’s arrest was conducted by special agents of Homeland Security Investigations Newark, under the direction of Acting Special Agent in Charge William S. Walker. The government is represented by Assistant U.S. Attorney Ariel Douek of the General Crimes Unit in Newark.

Chu made his initial appearance today before U.S. Magistrate Judge Leda Dunn Wettre in Newark federal court and was detained. The charge and allegations contained in the complaint are merely accusations, and Chu is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

The authorities have made it clear that they will not tolerate child predators in our communities. Chu’s arrest is a testament to their commitment to keeping our children safe. But the question remains: how many more Chu’s are out there, hiding in plain sight?
