Jakiem Miller, Voluntary Manslaughter while Armed, South Carolina 2022

A deadly shooting outside a Washington DC nightclub has landed a South Carolina man in prison for 18.5 years. Jakiem Miller, 28, was sentenced for the December 17, 2022, killing of Avon Perkins, 30, and the shooting of an innocent bystander, a college student, outside Air Nightclub in Adams Morgan. The incident occurred after Perkins was asked to leave the club and was approached by Miller, who had also been in the club that night.

According to the government’s evidence, a brief discussion between the two men turned violent when Perkins punched Miller in the face. Miller responded by pulling out a firearm and firing nine shots at Perkins, hitting him twice in the back as he ran away. One of the bullets also struck the bystander in the butt, causing non-life-threatening injuries.

Miller pleaded guilty on May 6, 2026, to one count of voluntary manslaughter while armed and one count of assault with a dangerous weapon. He was sentenced by Superior Court Judge Todd Edelman on August 7, with the prison term to be followed by five years of supervised release.

The case was investigated by the Metropolitan Police Department, with assistance from the U.S. Attorney’s Office. U.S. Attorney Jeanine Ferris Pirro and Interim Police Chief Jeffery Carroll commended the work of those who investigated the case, acknowledging the efforts of those who worked on the case from the U.S. Attorney’s Office.
