Miliki Lee, Carjacking, Washington 2023

A brazen carjacking in Washington D.C. has landed a 19-year-old Miliki Lee behind bars for five years. Lee, a resident of Washington, D.C., was sentenced by the Honorable Michael Ryan of the Superior Court of the District of Columbia for carjacking and possession of a firearm during a crime of violence.

According to the government’s evidence, with which Lee agreed, on October 27, 2023, at approximately 9:30 p.m., the victim was driving in the 1000 block of Buchanan St NE when another car blocked hers. Lee and his accomplices got out of that car and surrounded the victim’s vehicle, banging on the windows, brandishing a handgun, and eventually forcing her out of her car at gunpoint. Lee and his accomplices drove off in the victim’s car.

MPD officers immediately used their helicopter to track the victim’s vehicle into Prince George’s County, Maryland, and then back into the District. Lee crashed the car at North Capitol and Ingraham Streets and ran. Police apprehended Lee, and recovered a Glock handgun that was loaded with 29 rounds of ammunition.

The government had requested a nine-year prison term. However, Judge Ryan decided to go with a five-year sentence, suspending two years under the Youth Rehabilitation Act. Carjacking otherwise carries a mandatory minimum term of seven years’ incarceration. The court also ordered the sentence to be followed by 18 months’ probation.

U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Chief Pamela Smith of the Metropolitan Police Department commended the work of those investigating the case, with valuable assistance from the Prince George’s County Police Department. They acknowledged the efforts of those who worked on the case from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Columbia, including Assistant U.S. Attorney Kathryn Bartz.

The brazen carjacking that led to Lee’s five-year sentence is a stark reminder of the dangers that lurk on the streets of Washington D.C. The fact that Lee was able to carry out the crime with such brazen ease is a testament to the need for increased vigilance and cooperation between law enforcement agencies.
