The dark underbelly of Wall Street has been exposed as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) arrested 24 individuals, including a former prize fighter and several former financiers, in connection with a stolen and counterfeit bond ring.
The ring’s operations stretched across the country, from New Jersey to Pennsylvania, Kansas, and Nebraska, leaving a trail of deceit and financial ruin in its wake.
The investigation into the Union Trust Co. robbery in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, in March 1938, led to the arrest of Solly Seeman, a former New York boxer and fight manager, now free on bail in Syracuse, New York. Seeman’s involvement in the ring was a shocking revelation, given his background as a sports hero.
Other notable arrests included Federal Court William Abraham and Frank Silinsky, whose connections to the ring were tied to their former lives on Wall Street. The ring’s leaders allegedly orchestrated the disposal of $200,000 in stolen funds from the Pittsburgh robbery, as well as the attempted sale of counterfeit bonds worth $300,000 from the Kingdom of Belgium, $4,000 in counterfeit bonds from the Eastern Shore Public Service Co., and $3,000 in stolen bonds from the Hillside N.J. school district.
The FBI’s investigation also linked the ring to robberies in Holtwood, Pennsylvania, in July 1938, and Omaha, with attempts to dispose of the stolen and counterfeit bonds. The scope of the ring’s activities was staggering, with its tentacles reaching into multiple states and involving a diverse group of individuals.
The case highlighted the ease with which organized crime can infiltrate the financial system, leaving innocent people to suffer the consequences. As the FBI continues to investigate and prosecute those involved, the public remains vigilant, eager to see justice served.
The arrests sent shockwaves through the financial community, raising questions about the extent to which corruption had penetrated the highest echelons of Wall Street.
