DeJuan Bell, Double Homicide, District of Columbia 2024

WASHINGTON – In a chilling case of gun violence, DeJuan Bell, 47, has been sentenced to a staggering 24 years in federal prison for the cold-blooded murder of Davon Childs and the shooting of another individual. The sentence was announced by U.S. Attorney Matthew M. Graves and Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) Chief Pamela Smith.

Bell’s plea of guilty on March 1, 2024, set the stage for this life-changing sentence from Superior Court Judge Marisa J. Demeo on May 17, 2024. The judge sentenced Bell to concurrent sentences of 12 years for aggravated assault while armed and five years of supervised release, along with a second degree murder conviction that also included five years of supervised release.

The evidence presented by the government, which Bell admitted to, painted a grim picture. On December 10, 2021, at approximately 10:00 p.m., Bell, in a heinous act of violence, intentionally fired a 9mm semi-automatic handgun at least seven times towards two unarmed people, located in the second floor hallway of an apartment building on the 2300 block of 4th Street NE. The resulting violence left one man dead and another severely wounded.

In a statement, U.S. Attorney Graves and Chief Smith commended the Metropolitan Police Department for their relentless pursuit of justice in this case. They also acknowledged the dedication of the team from the U.S. Attorney’s Office, including Paralegal Lauren Douglas and former Paralegal Debra Forte, as well as Assistant U.S. Attorneys Erin DeRiso and Sarah Santiago, who worked tirelessly on the investigation and prosecution.

This sentence serves as a stark reminder of the harsh realities of gun violence in our communities and the gravity of such crimes. Bell’s conviction and sentencing come at a time when law enforcement agencies across the nation are increasingly focusing their efforts on stemming the tide of gun-related violence.
