Austin James McCastler II, a 36-year-old Pensacola resident, was sentenced to 30 years in federal prison for a string of crimes that included shooting at a DEA Special Agent. On March 7, 2025, McCastler refused to comply with a lawful warrant, instead barricading himself in his home and opening fire with a semi-automatic rifle. The incident led to a high-speed chase, which ended after an Escambia County Sheriff’s Deputy executed a PIT maneuver.
McCastler’s troubles began when undercover law enforcement purchased methamphetamine from his residence on two occasions. A warrant was obtained to search for and seize illicit narcotics from his home, but McCastler had other plans. He armed himself and prepared to take on the law, putting the lives of brave men and women in uniform at risk.
The case highlights the extreme dangers faced by law enforcement officers who put their lives on the line every day to keep communities safe. U.S. Attorney John Heekin praised the outstanding trial work by prosecutors, saying that anyone who threatens or harms a law enforcement officer in the Northern District of Florida will face the full might of the Department of Justice.
McCastler was found guilty in a jury trial and sentenced on multiple counts, including distribution of methamphetamine, possession with intent to distribute fentanyl and marijuana, and assault with a deadly weapon. His sentence serves as a warning to those who would dare to challenge the authority of law enforcement.
