ALPINE, Texas – 33-year-old Sonya Conchita Murillo, a former Marfa substitute teacher, has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for producing child pornography. Murillo’s crimes were uncovered after investigators found videos depicting her sexually abusing a prepubescent child.
According to court documents, Murillo was arrested on June 7, 2023, and pleaded guilty in January to one count of production of child pornography. Her former boyfriend, Patricio Javier Serrano, 33, was sentenced in March to 97 months in prison for possession and transportation of child pornography.
“The fact that the judge delivered the maximum allowed 30-year imprisonment to this defendant for producing child pornography is indicative of the utterly horrendous predatory acts Murillo committed,” said U.S. Attorney Jaime Esparza for the Western District of Texas. “Protecting the children in our communities is a top priority in this district, and child predators will be brought to justice.”
Special Agent in Charge John Morales for FBI El Paso added, “Children trust their teachers and caretakers, and Murillo betrayed that trust. No child should ever have to question the motives of an adult they interact with at school or at home.”
Homeland Security Investigations Acting Special Agent in Charge Eric McLoughlin stated, “Cases involving people in positions of trust are particularly disturbing. The punishment is fitting of the crime.”
The FBI, Homeland Security Investigations, Texas Department of Public Safety, and Marfa Police Department investigated the case, while Assistant U.S. Attorneys Amy Greenbaum and Kevin Cayton prosecuted the case. The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat child sexual exploitation and abuse.
This case serves as a stark reminder of the need for constant vigilance to protect the most vulnerable among us. As law enforcement continues to work tirelessly to identify and prosecute child predators, the community must also remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity to ensure the safety of our children.
