Leader Charge Racks Up 1 Year, $100 Fine for Sex Offender Snafu
Pierre, SD – In a shocking display of bureaucratic bungling, Jesse Leader Charge, a 29-year-old man from Rosebud, South Dakota, has been sentenced to 1 year, 1 day in federal prison for failure to register as a sex offender.
According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, Leader Charge was convicted of Abusive Sexual Contact in U.S. District Court, District of South Dakota, on October 7, 2019. As a result of this conviction, Leader Charge must comply with the requirements of the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act.
However, Leader Charge failed to update his registration upon release from prison on September 11, 2023, and didn’t bother to update it until he was arrested in December of 2023.
“This case is a stark reminder that sex offenders must comply with the law,” said U.S. Attorney Alison J. Ramsdell. “We will not tolerate any attempts to evade justice.”
Leader Charge’s sentence was handed down by Chief Judge Roberto A. Lange, U.S. District Court, on May 6, 2024. In addition to his prison time, Leader Charge was also ordered to pay a $100 special assessment to the Federal Crime Victims Fund.
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. Led by the U.S. Attorneys’ Offices and the DOJ’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state, and local resources to locate, apprehend, and prosecute individuals who exploit children, as well as identify and rescue victims.
This case was investigated by the U.S. Marshals Service and the Rosebud Sioux Tribe Law Enforcement Services. Assistant U.S. Attorney Abby Roesler prosecuted the case.
Leader Charge was immediately remanded to the custody of the U.S. Marshals Service, where he will begin serving his sentence. It’s a harsh reminder that sex offenders will not be tolerated in our society, and will be held accountable for their actions.
